A Place Once Familiar? v0.02 update

Hey everyone! Here's a progress update on A Place Once Familiar, our quiet horror story about memory, grief, and going back to somewhere you thought you'd left behind.
🚘 Intro Cutscene Progress
We’ve built out the intro cutscene where the player returns to a familiar place from their past. It’s a slow, moody car ride shot from above, paired with a reflective internal monologue. The scene now transitions smoothly from the main menu using a screen fade, giving it a cinematic flow.
🎙️ Voiceover & Subtitles
We wrote a short voiceover script that captures the character’s emotional state — nostalgic, a bit regretful, and unsure why they’ve come back. Subtitles are now fully implemented and synced, with dynamic SFX triggers on specific lines:
-
Gravel crunching under boots
-
A fire crackling in the distance
-
A low hum layered in, like something remembered
⚙️ Other Improvements
-
The car stops automatically at a trigger zone
-
A door opens with a sound cue, and the scene fades out before loading into gameplay
-
We reorganized the UI layers to keep subtitles from clashing with the fade-in/out elements
The goal is to make the intro feel like entering a memory—calm, haunting, and just a little bit off.
🗺️ Next Steps
We'll be fleshing out the campground environment and deciding on final voiceover delivery (AI or custom VO). Either way, we’re focused on maintaining that quiet, reflective tone.
Thanks for reading and following the journey. More soon. 🌲
